Only Stratus Technologies combines enterprise-class computing for Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware vSphere environments with our Continuous Processing technology in the most reliable servers on the planet.
Stratus Technologies innovative design eliminates the operational complexity and high costs inherent in approaches such as clusters — making the industry’s ultimate level of uptime protection more practical and more affordable than ever.
Traditional clusters are designed for failure, Stratus is designed not to fail in the first place.
Stratus innovations are the result of more than twenty-five years’ experience of assuring uptime for the world’s most demanding applications.
Stratus uses lockstep technology with replicated, fault-tolerant hardware components that process the same instructions at the same time. In the event of a component malfunction, the additional component provides an active spare that continues normal operation and completely averts system downtime.
Whilst other servers may offer duplicated power supplies, fans, and disk drives, only Stratus provides protection for core system components including motherboards, processors, memory, I/O buses, and I/O adapters.

Our unique combination of ActiveService capabilities enables built-in serviceability that other vendors simply can’t match. For starters, Stratus ftServer systems constantly monitor their own operation. When a fault is detected, the server correctly isolates the condition and automatically opens a call that tells the Stratus support centre exactly what action to take.
If necessary, the system automatically orders its own hot-swappable replacement part and ensures the correct part is delivered within 24 hours to key locations worldwide. Users can install replacement components easily while the ftServer system continues to run uninterrupted.
As Stratus is designed to call home in the event of component failure, they have no need to rely on strict lab tests to prove their uptime claims. They have real-world customer experience. Stratus accurately measure the uptime percentage of their entire estate. This is currently close to six 9's, which represents less than 1 minute of unplanned downtime per year.
Stratus. Uptime, all the time.

Linux in the datacentre – uptime assured
There is praise here for using Linux in the datacentre and its use is continuing to grow. However, there is criticism with regard to high availability – even though the linux kernel is “pretty solid”, it is quite clear that setting up high availability is a pain in the proverbial. So instead of all that [...]

Extreme Availability? Good thing or bad?
There is a very interesting discussion going on here asking whether delivering extreme availability is a good thing – does it lure customers into a false sense of security? The debate covers when you might need 100% availability and whether it is worth the cost. There is an argument to say that the costs go [...]

New Uptime Appliance for critical virtualisation infrastructure management
In today’s consumer world one of the things we rely on are appliances – you know – white goods (although you can get them in different colours now) – cookers, washing machines and fridges. I always remember a question we were asked in one of my first physics lesson – if you switch the fridge [...]
